Victor Campenaerts: “Ik had wel verwacht dat ik na de eerste van drie ronden een achterstand zou hebben op Yves Lampaert, die altijd snel start. Vijftien seconden was niet weinig, maar aan het einde van de tweede ronde had ik vijf seconden voorsprong en uiteindelijk hield ik twintig seconden over op Lampaert, maar slechts twee en een halve op Thomas De Gendt. In de derde ronde was Thomas duidelijk de snelste. Ik ben heel blij dat Thomas naast mij stond op het podium.”
“Ik had op voorhand verkondigd dat ik me de beste tijdrijder van België voel en uiteraard heb ik mezelf daarmee druk opgelegd. Ik ben heel blij dat ik mijn ambitie heb kunnen waarmaken. Dit is mijn eerste overwinning voor Lotto Soudal. Ik heb al een aantal tijdritten gereden, waarin ik telkens goed presteerde, maar niet kon winnen. Ik ben heel blij dat dat vandaag wel gelukt is. Op het Europees Kampioenschap in Glasgow op 8 augustus wil ik mijn Europese titel verdedigen. Het zal echter geen evidentie zijn om die titel te verlengen. Indien dat niet lukt, zal ik met plezier tijdritten betwisten in de Belgische driekleur. 7 juli vertrek ik met de ploeg op stage naar Livigno en ik zal er zelf twee weken langer blijven dan de anderen, waardoor ik een viertal weken op stage zal zijn. Ik hoop me zo optimaal voor te bereiden op het EK.”
Thomas De Gendt: “Ik heb gisteren twaalf uur in de wagen gezeten op de terugweg van mijn hoogtestage in Italië. Dat was dus allerminst de ideale voorbereiding. In de Dauphiné had ik geen goed gevoel, maar ik ben in volle opbouw naar de Tour. Vandaag strand ik op slechts twee en een halve seconde van Victor, wat voor mij een onverwachte prestatie is. Uiteraard had ik liefst zelf gewonnen, als je ziet dat het verschil zo miniem is, maar Victor is een wereldtopper in deze discipline dus is het geen schande om van hem te verliezen.”

Danny van Poppel heeft in België de eenenzeventigste editie van Halle-Ingooigem gewonnen in een sprint met een uitgedund eerste peloton. De 24-jarige topsprinter van Team LottoNL-Jumbo was na tweehonderd kilometer een fractie sneller dan landgenoot Fabio Jakobsen. Voor Van Poppel is het zijn tweede zege van het seizoen. In februari won hij een etappe in de Ronde van Valencia. De zege van Van Poppel is de twintigste zege van Team LottoNL-Jumbo.
De Belgische semi-klassieker, traditioneel de laatste voorbereiding op de nationale kampioenschappen was een slijtageslag. Van Poppel en Maarten Wynants wisten in de slotronde de oversteek te maken naar een omvangrijke kopgroep. Wynants hield vervolgens de groep bij elkaar, waarna Van Poppel de sprint vroeg begon.
“Eindelijk weer een keer gewonnen. Dit doet echt deugd. Ik zat er de laatste weken al een paar keer kort bij, vooral in de Giro, dus je kunt je voorstellen hoe blij ik ben dat ik weer win”, aldus Van Poppel. “Het was echt close tussen mij en Jakobsen, maar winnen is winnen. Ik zat perfect bij hem in het wiel. Ik wilde de sprint eerder aan gaan dan hij. Ik viel op het laatst een beetje stil, maar het was genoeg. Maarten heeft veel werk opgeknapt voor mij. We sprongen op de laatste keer Tiegemberg naar de kopgroep toe. Hij heeft ermede voor gezorgd dat het bij elkaar bleef en ik kon sprinten. Dit geeft moraal voor de komende weken.”

Roglic bekroont eindzege Ronde van Slovenië met winst in tijdrit
Primoz Roglic heeft voor de twee keer in zijn carrière de Ronde van Slovenië op zijn naam geschreven. De 28-jarige Sloveen deed dat met verve door na de koniginnenetappe ook de afsluitende tijdrit in Novo Mesto op zijn naam te schrijven. Voor Roglic, die zijn thuisronde ook won in 2015, staat de zegeteller dit jaar op zeven. Daardoor komt het aantal overwinningen van Team LottoNL-Jumbo op negentien.
Roglic, die over een maand aan zijn tweede Tour de France begint, was oppermachtig in de glooiende tijdrit over eenentwintig kilometer. Hij was een kleine halve minuut sneller dan Jan Tratnik. Door de tijdritzege van Roglic gaat Team LottoNL-Jumbo naar huis met drie etappezeges en de eindoverwinning.
“Het resultaat is perfect. Ik ben erg blij dat ik hier voor eigen publiek heb kunnen winnen. Dat was zonder de steun van mijn ploeggenoten en fans nooit gelukt. Mijn supporters waren de hele week geweldig. Deze overwinning is ook voor hun. Het was een week om niet snel te vergeten”, aldus Roglic.
“De Ronde van Slovenië is voor mij een ideale wedstrijd in de opbouw naar de Tour de France geweest”, vervolgt Roglic. “De Tour start over drie weken en deze wedstrijd was perfect om de intensiteit weer in de benen te krijgen. De komende weken zal vooral uit trainen en rusten bestaan en hopelijk ben ik dan klaar voor de Tour. Nu ga ik vooral even genieten van mijn overwinning.”
Eerder dit seizoen won Roglic de Ronde van het Baskenland en de Ronde van Romandië.

Antwan Tolhoek heeft in de zevende en laatste etappe van het Criterium du Dauphiné wederom zijn klimmerstalent getoond. De 24-jarige Zeeuw trok in de rit naar Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc met vijf anderen ten aanval. Tolhoek werd in de laatste drie kilometer ingelopen, waarna hij uiteindelijk als elfde over de streep kwam. In het klassement kwam hij een dikke halve minuut tekort voor een toptiennotering en finishte als elfde. In het jongerenklassement eindigde hij tweede.
Het koersverloop was een kopie van gisteren. Het was oorlog vanaf de start en het duurde tot op de Cormet de Roselend dat de kopgroep met Tolhoek een vrijgeleide kreeg. Hun maximale voorsprong bedroeg drie minuten.
“Ik voelde me heel goed en op de Roselend dacht ik: ik ga het gewoon proberen. Alles of niets en dan maar zien waar ik uitkom. Ik heb nooit gedacht aan de etappezege. Top tien in het klassement en de jongerentrui speelden wel door mijn gedachten. Daar had ik mijn hoop op gevestigd. Ik heb alles gegeven en ik ben heel blij met mijn prestaties en mijn elfde plaats. Ik denk dat ik hier iedereen elke dag verrast heb en mijzelf ook.”
Ook de ploegleiding is blij met de ontwikkeling van Tolhoek. “Wat Antwan hier heeft laten zien, is heel erg knap. We weten dat hij het kan, maar je moet het ook maar doen. Hij is er vol voor gegaan vandaag. Alles of niets. Vanaf de eerste klim zat hij mee in een kopgroep met zicht op de etappezege, top tien in het klassement en de jongerentrui. Dat is uiteindelijk niet gelukt, maar wat hij hier vandaag en de rest van de week heeft laten zien is knap en bewijst wat voor een groot talent hij is.”

De Spanjaard komt solo aan in La Rosière Espace San Bernardo. Klassementsleider Geraint Thomas verstevigt zijn voorsprong op de concurrente. De renner van team Sky wordt vandaag tweede. Daniel Martin (UAE Emirates) laat zien dat hij in topvorm is. Gisteren winnaar, vandaag derde.

Gianni Moscon (ook al team Sky) neemt de leiderstrui over van zijn geloste ploegmakker Michal Kwiatkowski.

Michał Kwiatkowski wint de proloog van het Critérium du Dauphiné. De Poolse renner van Team Sky is in de 6,6 KM lange proloog precies één seconde sneller dan Jos van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo).
Gianni Moscon, ploegmakker van Kwiatkowski, finisht in de straten van Valence als derde.

“Ik had hier heel graag willen winnen. Dat was mijn doel voor deze ronde na een loodzware Giro. Dat is helaas niet gelukt”, aldus een teleurgestelde Van Emden. “Het parcours was voor specialisten, met dat klimmetje erin. Het was wel heel snel. Mijn tijdrit was zo goed als perfect, maar er was er eentje sneller. Ik had vrijwel direct in de gaten dat het een goede tijd was en dat ik er heel dichtbij ging zijn. Het mocht niet zo zijn. “
Ploegleider Grischa Niermann kon het gevoel van Van Emden wel beamen. “Dit is heel erg balen. Op een seconde verliezen is nooit leuk. Jos heeft het gewoon heel goed gedaan. Het was zijn grote doel. Het was mooi geweest als we gewonnen hadden. Helaas mocht dat niet zo zijn. Heel zuur. We zijn hier gekomen met een ploeg zonder klassementsrenners. We zijn hier maar met zes omdat Robert Wagner naar het ziekenhuis moest voor de geboorte van de baby. Een vroeg succes zou mooi zijn meegenomen.”
