Amgen Tour of California Womens Race empowered with SRAM (2.WWT), tweede etappe

 
 
Katie Hall rijdt op Mt. Baldy met “Gunfactor 10” naar de overwinning. De Amerikaanse renster van Team Boels Dolmans is “net even sneller” aan de finish dan haar ploeggenoten Anna van der Breggen:-)
 
Ashleigh Moolman (Team CCC) arriveert op 33 seconden als derde
 
Anna van der Breggen heeft een grote stap gezet op weg naar de eindzege in de Ronde van Californië.
 
De wereldkampioene kwam in de tweede etappe samen met Katie Hall met meer dan een halve minuut voorsprong op de eerste achtervolger over de finish.
 
Van der Breggen, die de ronde in 2017 won, soleerde donderdag naar de zege in de eerste rit en liet een dag later, in de korte, maar zware koninginnenrit naar de top van Mount Baldy (7,6 kilometer à 8,8%) de concurrentie weer haar hielen zien.
 
 
Nu sprong ze weg met Katie Hall. Op de finish liet ze de zege aan haar Amerikaanse teamgenote, die vorig jaar bij absentie van Van der Breggen het berg- en het eindklassement won.

Amgen Tour of California vrouwen, eerste etappe


Anna van der Breggen is niet voor niets naar de USA afgereisd. De wereldkampioen bij de vrouwen win de eerste etappe van de Amgen Tour of California Womens Race empowered with SRAM

Anna van der Breggen wint op indrukwekkende manier de openingsetappe van de Tour of California die vandaag is gestart vanuit Ventura. Van der Breggen viel met nog 3km te gaan aan, bouwde een voorsprong op van 20 seconden en hield stand tot aan de finish waar ze solo aan de meet kwam. Twee jaar geleden won Van der Breggen al eens het eindklassement met maar 1 luttele seconden verschil op haar huidige ploeggenote en local hero Katie Hall. Dezelfde Katie Hall won een jaar later de Tour of California en maakt dit jaar deel uit van de Boels Dolmans equipe die met z’n vijfen (Blaak, Schneider, Canuel, Van der Breggen en Hall) aan de start staan in California.

DS Danny Stam kijkt direct na de etappe terug. “Het team deed het super. Zoals we het van te voren besproken hadden. Katie deed een goede aanval na 53 kilometer waardoor het peleton volledig brak. Alles kwam uiteindelijk terug maar had wel een knak gehad. Vervolgens deden Chantal en Karol-Ann goed werk door de leidster in de wedstrijd terug te pakken. Anna demarreert op de laatste klim en maakt het op een knappe manier af.”

Marta Lach (CCC Liv) wint in Steinfort de eerste etappe van het Festival Elsy Jacobs 2019.
 
Marta Lach kan haar geluk niet op na de formidabele ritoverwinning in de GP Elsy Jacobs van zaterdag. “Dit was mijn dag!”
 
 
“Het was met de regenval een zware wedstrijd, maar koud had ik het niet. Ik voelde me vanochtend bij de start al goed en dat goede gevoel heb ik voortdurend gehouden. Tijdens de koers zag ik verschillende aanvallen. Toen Elena Pironne voorop lag en een groepje in de tegenaanval ging, wist ik dat dit hét moment was om mee te zitten”, vertelt Marta.
 
“De samenwerking van voren was goed, maar niet optimaal. Ik rook kansen op een overwinning en heb dus alles gegeven. Toen ik in de laatste kilometer omkeek, zag ik het peloton naderen. Op 500 meter probeerde ik het, maar m’n twee concurrenten kwamen terug. Op minder dan 300 meter gaf ik nog een keer een klap op de pedalen en toen was het wel raak. Een fantastisch gevoel.”

Dubbel feest bij CCC-Liv: Marianne wint etappe en eindklassement in Yorkshire
 
Op zeer knappe wijze heeft Marianne Vos zaterdagmiddag zowel de etappe- als eindzege gegrepen in de ASDA Women’s Tour de Yorkshire. Ze verwees Mavi Garcia en Soraya Paladin naar de plaatsen twee en drie in de slotsprint, nadat het drietal in het laatste wedstrijduur met elkaar aan de leiding had gereden. De overige rensters van CCC-Liv verrichten vooral uitstekend werk in de voorbereiding.
 
Als zesde renster in het algemeen klassement (+ 8 seconden) begon Marianne Vos zaterdag aan de tweede en laatste etappe in het regenachtige Yorkshire. Onze kopvrouw wist dus dat ze wat tijd terug moest pakken op haar concurrenten en zag met het heuvelachtige en daarmee pittige parcours voldoende kansen om het verschil te maken.
 
Ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens: “Het was moeilijk om van tevoren een duidelijke tactiek af te spreken, het koersverloop was bepalend. We wisten in ieder geval dat we al meteen na het vertrek bij de les moesten zijn, want met windkracht 6 – af en toe vanaf de zijkant blazend – kon het al vroeg gebeuren. Zeker op de tweede klim van de dag was het opletten geblazen, want dat was de logische plek waar de koers geopend zou worden.”
 
Dat gebeurde ook: Anna van der Breggen sprong weg op de Côte de Hooks House Farm en kreeg Lizzie Deignan achter zich aan. Marianne reed uitstekend van voren, maar maakte de oversteek niet. Bij de volgende klim, toen het achtervolgende peloton Van der Breggen bijna kon aantikken, versnelde de Nederlandse opnieuw. Soraya Paladin en Annemiek van Vleuten haakten hun karretje aan en zo kregen we drie koplopers. Daarachter zat een sterke achtervolgende groep met onder meer Marianne.
 
Met minder dan vijftig kilometer te gaan werden de drie leiders in de kraag gevat. Op de Côte de Grosmont kneep de Spaanse Garcia ertussenuit. Op de daarop volgende Côte de Ugglebarnby gingen Marianne en Paladin in de tegenaanval. Zij sloten aan, vonden elkaar in de samenwerking en maakten zich op voor een boeiend en bloedstollend slot waarin de voorsprong kilometerslang tussen de 10 en 15 seconden schommelde.
 
In de laatste tien kilometer knakte het vertrouwen bij de drie overgebleven achtervolgers en wisten we dat de winnaar voorin gezocht moest worden. Marianne was een klasse beter in de slotsprint in het fraaie Scarborough. Ze pakte zo niet alleen de ritzege, maar ging ook met het eindklassement aan de haal.
 
Schitterende zege
“Dit is een schitterende overwinning voor CCC-Liv en met name voor Marianne zelf. Ze haalt al het hele seizoen een hoog niveau, had ook al een WorldTour-zege op zak, maar kampte in de Ronde van Vlaanderen en Amstel Gold Race op beslissende momenten met pech. Met deze knappe overwinning haalt ze haar gram. Deze zege komt haar toe”, zegt ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens.

Sofie de Vuyst (Parkhotel Valkenburg) wint in Gooik de vrouweneditie van de Brabantse Pijl.
concurrentie steekt stokje voor slim tactisch spel
Met een slim plan probeerde CCC-Liv de Brabantse Pijl van woensdagmiddag naar zich toe te trekken. Het team had al twee rensters in de kopgroep zitten en wilde ook Marianne Vos naar voren loodsen. Het lukte uiteindelijk net niet. Sofie De Vuyst was sprintend de snelste in Gooik. Er waren al meteen na het startschot veel ontsnappingspogingen. Bij een aanval van drie rensters zat Pauliena Rooijakkers keurig mee. Even later sloten negen kompanen aan, onder wie ook Marta Lach. Het peloton reed met de handrem erop, en dus liep de voorsprong van de twaalf leiders al snel op tot anderhalve minuut.
Ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens: “We waren er niet helemaal gerust op, want van voren zat Coryn Rivera, een snelle sprinter. Op 40 kilometer van de streep is Marianne Vos volle bak gaan rijden over de kasseien van de Schavolliestraat, met als doel om de oversteek te maken.” Liane Lippert (Team Sunweb) kroop mee in haar wiel. “Toen het gaatje aanzienlijk was verkleind, tot 35 seconden, hebben we afgesproken dat Pauliena Rooijakkers vanuit de kopgroep zou wachten. Pauliena verrichtte perfect werk, het gat verkleinde verder. Maar van voren was Sunweb vertegenwoordigd met drie rensters, en ook zij hielden de benen niet stil.”
Dichter dan 20 à 25 seconden zou de oranje tandem van Marianne en Pauliena niet komen. En dus sprintte de kopgroep om de winst in de Brabantse Pijl. Marta Lach rolde als tiende over de streep, achter onder meer winnares Sofie De Vuyst.
“We hadden een mooi plan en hebben er ook alles aan gedaan om dat goed uit te voeren. Marianne is gaan rijden bij een achterstand van 1 minuut en 22 seconden en heeft alles gegeven. Ze kwam, met steun van Pauliena, ook heel dichtbij. Helaas stak de concurrentie er een stokje voor”, zegt ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens.

Marianne Vos wint de Trofeo Alfredo Binda. In het Italiaanse Cittiglio is de kopvrouw van TEAM CCC sneller dan Amanda Spratt en Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig

CCC-Liv heeft in de Trofeo Alfredo Binda (UCI Women’s WorldTour) in Italië haar visitekaartje afgegeven. Na uitstekend voorbereidend werk van de volledige oranje equipe toonde Marianne Vos haar klasse in de slotsprint. Ze won overtuigend een spurt van een groep waartoe ook Ashleigh Moolman Pasio behoorde. In het begin hield het peloton een moordend tempo aan en was het lastig voor avonturiers om weg te sluipen. Toch waren er rensters die hun kans schoon zagen en (kortstondig) succes hadden bij hun demarrages, onder wie Taylor Wiles en Grace Brown. Na inspanningen van onder meer CCC-Liv werden aanvallen onschadelijk gemaakt. Ashleigh Moolman Pasio gooide in de voorlaatste ronde op de Orino het tempo omhoog, waardoor een select gezelschap overbleef. Na de klim zakte de snelheid in en konden achtervolgers terug aansluiten. Demi Vollering koos de aanval toen de toppers even uitpuften en zich voorbereidden op het finale vuurwerk.

Toen de Nederlandse op negen kilometer van de meet werd gegrepen, begon het echte spektakel. Kasia Niewiadoma viel op de laatste beklimming van Orino aan, maar kreeg Ashleigh niet uit haar wiel. Enkele vooraf getipte winnaars – ook Marianne Vos – sloten aan en zo ontstond een elitegroepje van acht dat om de zege mocht strijden. Zowel Ashleigh als Marianne reageerde attent op uitvallen in een alles-of-niet-poging van concurrenten om een sprint te ontlopen. Ashleigh zette zich in de laatste drie kilometer voor Marianne op kop toen een achtervolgend groepje met sprinters probeerde terug te komen. Marianne kon zich intussen opmaken voor de sprint. Met een paar rake klappen op de pedalen sprintte ze overtuigend naar de zegebloemen. Het was al de vierde keer dat ze hier in Cittiglio won.

“Dit is een prachtige overwinning voor de hele ploeg”, zegt ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens. “De teamtactiek is vandaag tot in de puntjes uitgevoerd. Met name Riejanne Markus en Jeanne Korevaar hebben keurig gereageerd op versnellingen en uitvallen, zodat Ashleigh en Marianne fris aan de finale konden beginnen. In de twee laatste ronden zou Ashleigh aanvallen om zo veel mogelijk sprinters te lossen en ook dat lukte. Ashleigh en Marianne hebben de overtalsituatie in de laatste kilometers op een goede manier uitgespeeld. Toen een achtervolgende groep akelig dichtbij kwam, gaf Ashleigh van voren nog eens gas zodat Marianne geen concurrentie van meer sterke sprinters hoefde te vrezen.”

Santos Women’s Tour Down Under, stage 3

 
De derde etappe van de Santos Women’s Tour Down Under is een prooi voor Grace Brown (Mitchelton Scott)). Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton Scott) blijft leider in het algemeenklassement. Morgen is er in Adelaide het afsluitende criterium.

De derde etappe begon met een tegenvaller voor CCC-Liv: Ashleigh Moolman Pasion moest haar strijd staken. Ze had te veel hinder van keelklachten waarmee ze al haar hele verblijf in Australië kampt. Na een bezoek aan de dokter besloot ze om niet meer van start te gaan.

Ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens hield vooraf rekening met een ontsnapping, maar Mitchelton-Scott, met de klassementsleider in de gelederen, controleerde de koers al vroeg. Sommige rensters probeerden het wel, echter slaagden zij er nooit in om een serieus gat te slaan.

Na een doorkomst van de finishstraat, op amper 12 kilometer van de eindstreep, gebeurde er iets opmerkelijks: het peloton reed verkeerd. Daarop werd de koers geneutraliseerd en korte tijd later weer vrijgegeven. In de slotkilometers werd het pak rensters uit elkaar gereden.

“De finish was opnieuw lastig, met hellingsgraden van 4 à 5 procent. We hebben de hele wedstrijd attent meegekoerst en ons keurig laten zien, dat valt te prijzen. Maar in het slotstuk was het toneel met name aan de Australische rensters besteed”, zegt Jeroen Blijlevens.

Korte slotrit
Zondag wacht er nog een korte slotrit van ruim 42 kilometer op een plaatselijke omloop (25 ronden). Ook de mannen rijden hier.

Santos Women’s Tour Down Under,  stage 2

Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton Scott) wint solo de tweede etappe van de Santos Women’s Tour Down Under.

Het waren loodzware omstandigheden in Australië. Was de temperatuur op de openingsdag nog aangenaam, vrijdag, in de rit naar Angaston (117 kilometer), tikte de thermometer bijna 40 graden aan. Onder die Australische kozen twee rensters al vroeg het hazenpad. Zij reden maximaal 3,5 minuut voorsprong bij elkaar.

“Het waaide continu behoorlijk hard. Daardoor moesten we voortdurend alert zijn en goed van voren zitten, in het geval van waaiervorming. Enkele ploegen probeerden het wel, maar het ging nooit op de kant”, zegt ploegleider Jeroen Blijlevens.

Naar de finale toe werd het gat met de vluchters gedicht en begon het spel opnieuw. Zoals van tevoren verwacht werd het kruit drooggehouden tot de slotklim. “We hadden afgesproken dat we Ashleigh als ploeg zo goed mogelijk zouden afzetten. In de aanloop naar de klim, waar de weg al golfde, deed het team zijn werk uitstekend. Ashleigh deed vervolgens haar werk ook goed, alleen waren er een paar nog net wat beter.”

Ruimte voor ontsnapping?
Zaterdag is er de voorlaatste rit (105 kilometer). Jeroen Blijlevens: “We zullen morgen bekijken in hoeverre onze rensters hersteld zijn van deze zware etappe. Daarbij volgen we de ontwikkelingen in koers. Het klassement is grotendeels gevormd, er zijn al de nodige tijdsverschillen. Misschien leent deze rit zich voor een ontsnapping en kunnen we daarin ook wat ondernemen.”
