De Ronde van Vlaanderen 2020

Net als al de andere wedstrijden ging vandaag ook de Ronde van Vlaanderen niet door. Het is een groot verschil. Druk was het in 2019 en wel heel erg stil in 2020. De foto’s tonen het verschil. Een klein select groepje renners reed vandaag vanuit hun woon huis de “Lockdown Editie” van de Ronde. Amusant om naar te kijken. Greg van Avermaet laat zien dat hij nog steeds over een goede conditie bezit en wint “solo”. Mathieu van der Poel nam het op deze “werkloze” zondag in  de virtuele ‘Ronde van Zwift’ op tegen een aantal sterke concurrenten.  Op het parcours waar en aantal jaren geleden in Richmond (USA) het WK werd gehouden finisht van der Poel, vanuit de tuin achter zijn huis in ‘s Gravenwezel, in de achterhoede van deze virtuele wedstrijd.

Die ene foto

Na 2 weken thuis zitten met af en toe een uitje naar kantoor om het ontluikende onkruid op de parkeerplaats tussen de tegels te verwijderen gaat de verveling toenemen.

Je kunt als fotografenechtpaar, als alle camera’s, lenzen en alle andere toebehoren opgepoetst en weer keurig netjes in de koffer en de tas zitten, niet weer alles uitpakken en er nog eens naar kijken hoe mooi gesorteerd al je gereedschap werkloos voor nog, vermoedelijk, vele weken of zelfs maanden onaangeroerd moet blijven.

Het coronavirus heeft iedereen in zijn greep. Heel erg triest en beangstigend voor alle zieke mensen en de vele nabestaanden waarvan hun dierbaren het niet hebben kunnen redden. Ook triest voor alle MKB’ers die nu amper het hoofd boven water kunnen houden. Ook het grote aantal ZZP’ers hebben het moeilijk nu er geen of bijna geen inkomsten zijn.

Ook in onze branche, de fotografie, is het erg moeilijk om zakelijk te overleven. Of je nu studio-fotograaf bent, of wilde dieren in een ver tropisch land op de gevoelig plaat wilt vastleggen. Het lukt niet, met alle regels en restricties die er zijn, om momenteel met fotografie je geld te verdienen. Sporters die niet kunnen sporten. Geen voetbal, geen basketball of hockey. Er is op dit moment, en wie weet hoe lang het allemaal nog duurt, voor ons niets vast te leggen.

Hoop doet leven, nu op dit moment tegen beter weten in. De Olympische spelen zijn al naar volgend jaar 2021 verplaatst. Voor de grote voetbaltoernooien en al die competities op hoog en laag niveau is op dit moment nog geen oplossing gevonden. En nu ook, onze grote passie, het wielrennen. Hierbij is het nog lang niet zeker welke uitgestelde wedstrijden er later dit jaar nog verreden kunnen worden. Gezondheid voor iedereen is nu het allerbelangrijkste. De Tour de France is altijd heilig geweest. Maar toch denk ik dat het bijna onmogelijk is dat deze wedstrijd in juli door zal gaan.

Voor mij, met een lang carrière als wielerfotograaf, is er nu eindelijk gelegenheid om het foto-archief uit het “analoge” tijdperk eens onder handen te nemen. Foto’s in zwart-wit en duizenden kleurendia’s liggen al jaren te wachten om in gescand te worden.

Daar was jarenlang geen tijd voor. De ene wielerwedstrijd was nog niet afgelopen of de andere was alweer begonnen. Sterker nog, al een aantal jaren zijn er tegenwoordig meerdere, ja soms zelfs wel vier of vijf, wedstrijden op dezelfde dag. En die werden allemaal door ons fotopersbureau gecoverd.

Dus nu, in deze voor ons wel heel erg (ongewone) rustige tijd, pakken we zo om de dag wat foto’s om in te scannen. Dat is echt een monnikenwerk. Op de meeste foto’s en negatieven, veelal op lokatie ontwikkeld en afgedrukt, zitten krasjes en stofjes. Dat kan met een aantal muisklikken digitaal geretoucheerd worden. Maar de gemiddelde tijd per foto bedraagt toch al snel 5 – 6 minuten bewerkingstijd. Snel uitgerekend betekent dat, als je dagelijks vijf uur daar aan werkt, je zo eind 2035 de laatste dia in de scanner zou kunnen doen. Onbegonnen werk dus. Maar met wat leuke muziek op de achtergrond en een lieve vrouw die me in deze moeilijke dagen extra verwend kom ik hopelijk de tijd op kantoor wel door.

En juist die ene overgebleven foto van wielrenner Stephen Roche doet mij denken aan de tijd “toen geluk nog heel gewoon was”.

Toen, zeg maar vanaf het begin van mijn carrière, in 1975 tot halverwege de jaren ’90 hadden we ook haast om de foto op tijd bij de redacties van de kranten te krijgen. En daar kwam heel wat vakmanschap en doorzettingsvermogen bij kijken.

Nu zenden we het beeld bijna live vanuit de camera naar onze server en staat de foto twee minuten later online op onze website en op de internetsite van diverse gespecialiseerde wielrenwebsites die we wereldwijd voorzien met actuele foto’s. Je moet als fotograaf met de tijd meegaan.

Die ene kleine foto van 16 bij 20 cm. met aan de zijkant de tekst, die we tegenwoordig in keurig Nederlands caption noemen gemaakt met een een ouderwetse typemachine, bracht mijn gedachten terug naar de tijd van hard werken met veel geduld. Ik kan u allemaal uitleggen dat het voor ons, sport-/persfotografen, een geheel andere tijd was dan nu vandaag de dag. Maar je wist gewoon niet beter.

Kranten werkten in de zeventiger jaren nog niet in kleur. Van internet en wifi had niemand nog gehoord. We werkten nog veel  met zwart-wit-films. Of je nu voor de grote persburo’s als Associated Press, Reuters of Agence France Presse werkte, je moest na de finish de donkere kamer in om de films te ontwikkelen, de foto’s af te drukken en via een analoge telefoonlijn de foto in 7 minuten naar de krant te zenden. En dan moest je niet de pech hebben dat de telefoonlijn halverwege, of erger nog tegen het einde van de transmissie, verbrak. Want dan kon je gewoon opnieuw beginnen.

Begin jaren ’80 kwam de kleurenfoto in de krant. Dat vergde heel veel rijd. Duurde het ontwikkelen van een zwart-wit filmpje inclusief drogen zo’n 6 minuten. Bij een kleurenfilm was dat een stuk ingewikkelder. Het verzenden van een kleurenfoto duurde, zonder tegenslag, 29 minuten. Er moesten hierbij vier “separaties” verzonden worden. In CMYK wat stond voor Cyaan, Magenta, Yellow en Black. En die vier kleuren werden bij het drukken van de krant een kleurenfoto.

De grote innovatie van analoog naar digitaal ging voor ons met een best wel langdurige tussenstap.

Het ontwikkelen van de kleurenfilm duurde nog even lang als de jaren ervoor maar zo rond 1985 kwam het bekende Zweedse merk Hasselblad met een digitale scanner op de markt waarmee je een kleurennegatief kon verzenden. En 10 jaar daarna werd de digitale camera geïntroduceerd. Canon ontwikkelde destijds, samen met Kodak, een niet te betalen camera. Voor de somma van 28.000 gulden had je een stuk techniek in huis waar we nu om moeten lachen. Geen schermpje achterop om het resultaat direct te kunnen kijken en de resolutie: 1 megapixel!

Het klinkt zo dichtbij: 1995. Snel uitgerekend is dat exact 25 jaar geleden. En, geachte jongeren onder ons, geloof me dat een goed werkende portable computer nog nauwelijks verkrijgbaar was.

Net zoals in de auto-industrie, de evolutie in het wielrennen van stalen naar carbon frames, is in de fotografie ook heel wat veranderd. En ik ben een gelukkig mens om dat allemaal meegemaakt te mogen hebben. Lang leve het “digitale tijdperk!

Nairo Quintana wint de laatste etappe van deze zevendaagse wedstrijd. Maximilian Schachmann wint Parijs-Nice . De Duitse renner van BORA-hansgrohe houdt op de klim naar Valdeblore La Colmiane voldoende tijd over op Tiesj Benoot.
