Presidential Tour of Turkey, vierde etappe

Het moest uit zijn tenen komen. Met een laatste krachtsinspanning wint Caleb Ewan de vierde etappe van de Presidential Tour of Turkey.

De langste etappe van de Ronde van Turkije kende een klassiek wedstrijdverloop. Vrijwel meteen na de start kozen vijf renners voor de aanval, maar al snel lieten twee vluchters zich opnieuw uitzakken. Zo werd het voor de drie resterende aanvallers, mede door de tegenwind, een quasi onmogelijke opdracht om uit de greep te blijven van het peloton. Uiteindelijk strandde de vroege vlucht op een tiental kilometer van de meet. Dat werd het sein voor Lotto Soudal om zich vooraan in het peloton te posteren. Caleb Ewan werd in de aanloop naar de hellende aankomst door zijn ploegmaats in een perfecte positie gebracht. De Australiër beloonde even later die inspanningen met ritwinst! In een prangende sprint was het de Spanjaard Lobato die zijn concurrenten probeerde te verrassen, maar Caleb Ewan timede zijn versnelling tot in de perfectie en remonteerde de Spanjaard in de laatste meters. Zo is het voor Caleb Ewan de tweede officiële overwinning in Lotto Soudal-tenue.

 

Caleb Ewan: “Al na de eerste etappes, ook al had ik niet de beste benen, voelde ik dat ritwinst mogelijk was. Dat gaf me heel wat vertrouwen en ook de benen voelden dag na dag steeds beter aan. De laatste drie à vier kilometer vandaag waren zwaarder dan aanvankelijk gedacht. Ik deed wat opzoekingswerk online voor aanvang van de etappe, maar de hellingsgraad kan je op die manier niet perfect inschatten. De ploeg hield me steeds in een perfecte positie tijdens de aanloop naar de slotklim. Zo kon ik heel wat waardevolle energie sparen, die me aan het eind duidelijk van pas kwam. Sam Bennett zou opnieuw een kwaaie klant geweest zijn, maar net wanneer hij zijn sprint zou moeten lanceren, merkte ik dat hij vrij vermoeid oogde. Dat is het moment waarop ik mijn sprint inzette. Gelukkig had ik zelf aan het einde nog een versnelling in de benen. Dat was ook nodig met Lobato die van ver aanging. Ik haalde niet mijn hoogste wattages, maar ik had duidelijk de meeste energie over.”

“Mijn twee zeges dit seizoen heb ik allebei behaald op een hellende aankomst, maar ik kan zeker ook winnen in een vlakke sprint. Ik heb mijn lead-out Jasper De Buyst, die uitviel in Parijs-Nice, geruime tijd moeten missen. Hij is misschien die ene pion die ik tekort kwam tijdens de hectische finales. De aankomsten bergop zijn daarom iets gemakkelijker om zelf positie te kiezen. Het team is me steeds blijven steunen, dus is het toch een opluchting om hen te belonen met een zege. Ik kan nu met iets minder druk starten in de laatste ritten. Ik hoop dat ik de bal aan het rollen heb gebracht richting mijn volgende wedstrijd, de Giro d’Italia. Daar hoop ik met de best mogelijke conditie aan de start te staan.”

Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck – Quick Step) herhaalt zijn kunstje van een jaar geleden. Max Walscheid (Team Sunweb) finisht als tweede.

Jakobsen: “De credits gaan voor een groot deel naar mijn sterke ploegmakkers. Ik viel op ruim 80 kilometer van de finish. Ze hielpen mij om weer vooraan terug te komen dus riep ik dat ik me goed voelde.”
“Bij die val brak ook mijn voorvork. Het was best een lullig momentje. Twee renners voor me haakten met hun stuur in elkaar. Ik reageerde gelijk door te remmen maar achter me reden ze op mij in. Met een andere fiets kon ik, dankzij vooral Morkov terug keren.”

Ronde van Vlaanderen 2019

Alberto Bettiol wint verrassend de Ronde van Vlaanderen. Exact op dezelfde wijze als Niki Terpstra een jaar geleden. Wegrijden, net voor de beklimming van de Paterberg, en pas na de eindstreep de achtervolgers met vreugde tranen in de ogen terug zien..

Terpstra kent nu veel pech en valt zwaar. Kasper Asgreen  (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), ook al verrassend,  komt afgescheiden van het peloton als tweede aan in Oudenaarde en Alexander Kristoff  wint de sprint van het peloton. Mathieu van der Poel rijdt een formidabele  Ronde van Vlaanderen. Het is even schrikken als Poeleke junior door de lucht vliegt en direct aan zijn schouder voelt. Niets gebroken, dus gaat de man van staal in de achtervolging. De Nederlands kampioen komt na een zware krachtinspanning terug en wordt uiteindelijk vierde.

Van Aert maakt indruk met tweede plaats in E3 Binckbank Classic

Wout van Aert heeft indruk gemaakt met zijn tweede plaats in de E3 Binckbank Classic. De kopman van Team Jumbo-Visma moest in een sprint met vijf alleen de Tsjech Zdenek Stybar voor zich dulden. Voor Van Aert is het zijn tweede podiumplaats, nadat hij derde werd in Strade Bianche. Vorige week werd hij in Milaan-Sanremo zesde.

De E3 Binckbank Classic bleef tamelijk gesloten tot de heuvelzone. Nadat aanvallen van onder anderen Danny van Poppel, Mike Teunissen en Amund Jansen tenietgedaan waren, trok Bob Jungels ten aanval. De Luxemburger kreeg meer dan een minuut voorsprong alvorens de favorieten van zich lieten spreken op de Paterberg en de Oude Kwaremont.

Van Aert bleek heel sterk en reed weg in het gezelschap van Greg van Avermaet, Zdenek Stybar en Alberto Bettiol. De vier sloten pas in de laatste zeven kilometer aan bij Jungels, waarna het een sprint werd tussen de vijf. Daarin profiteerde Stybar van het feit dat hij in de achtervolging op zijn ploegmaat geen kopwerk hoefde doen.

“De E3 is een van de moeilijkste koersen van het voorjaar. Dat heb ik wel gevoeld. Dit is toch nog net wat lastiger dan de voorgaande koersen. Ik ben blij dat ik weer een finale heb kunnen rijden”, aldus Van Aert. “Ik heb zeker aan winnen gedacht. Maar na zo’n lastige koers is het een atypische sprint. Ik voelde me heel goed en heb mij vooral gefocust op de aanvallen van Stybar waarvan je wist dat ze gingen komen. Het was de beste tactiek om meteen op zijn wiel te zitten. Makkelijk was dat zeker niet. Het duurde ook vrij lang voordat we de aansluiting konden maken bij Jungels. Dat heeft ook krachten gekost.”

Van Aert zag een sterke ploeg vandaag. “Na de eerste schifting zaten we nog met veel jongens voorin. Van Poppel, Teunissen en Jansen hebben heel goed werk geleverd. Jammer dat Amund net niet mee kon met Jungels toen hij ten aanval trok. Toen Van Avermaet ging op de Paterberg, heb ik geen moment getwijfeld om mee te springen. Als hij gaat, dan weet je hoe laat het is. Dan moet je mee zijn. En dat is gelukt.”

Dat noemt men nu “met speels gemak!” . Dylan Groenewegen wint op één been en met de vingers in z’n neus de wereldbekerwedstrijd Driedaagse van de Panne

Voor Groenewegen is het zijn vijfde zege van het seizoen, de negende voor Team Jumbo-Visma.

De eerste van drie klassiekers deze week was een nerveuze wedstrijd waarin het continu opletten was. Groenewegen zat perfect geplaatst en werd op het laatste moment door Amund Jansen, Danny van Poppel en Mike Teunissen in stelling gebracht, waarna hij het subliem afmaakte.

“De ploeg heeft de hele dag goed werk geleverd. En ik ben voor het hele team blij dat ik het heb kunnen afmaken”, aldus Groenewegen. “In de technische finale was het drummen om posities te houden en lastig om samen te blijven als ploeg. We moesten al een sprintje doen voor de laatste bocht. Ik zat een beetje ingesloten, maar mijn ploeggenoten hebben dat prima opgelost. Ik ben blij dat ik hen heb kunnen belonen.
