Tim Wellens: “De voorbije twee dagen zijn goed verlopen. Zondag had ik de leiderstrui veroverd, maar de marge was klein en dus was de steun van mijn ploeg in de laatste twee ritten cruciaal. Het duurde gisteren heel lang voor een vlucht weg was en mijn ploegmaats hebben heel goed gecontroleerd, iedereen was sterk. Dankzij hen heb ik de eindzege behaald in deze WorldTour-wedstrijd. En dit betekent veel voor mij. Ook al was het laat op het seizoen, er stond hier een sterk en gemotiveerd deelnemersveld aan de start. Ik heb de zege niet cadeau gekregen.”
“Het is leuk het seizoen met een zege af te sluiten, net zoals ik het begonnen ben. Morgen begint onze tocht huiswaarts. We vliegen eerst naar Hong Kong, waar we twaalf uur moeten wachten op onze volgende vlucht. Adam Hansen heeft daar gewoond en gaat ons er rondleiden. Daar kijken we allemaal naar uit. Binnenkort vertrek ik op vakantie. In totaal zal ik een tweetal weken van de fiets blijven. Daarna start ik met lopen, zwemmen, fitness en mountainbike. Ik ga eerst even nagenieten van deze overwinning en dan beginnen aan de voorbereiding op 2018!”
Net zoals de voorgaande etappes waarin het uitdraaide op een massasprint, werd ook deze rit gekenmerkt door een vroege ontsnapping. De drie vluchters kregen vier minuten en werden pas zes kilometer voor de finish in Guilin ingerekend. “Dat was zoals we hadden gepland”, zegt ploegleider Grischa Niermann. “We hebben tot vijfhonderd meter van de streep een goede lead-out gehad. Daarna werden we in de laatste bocht gepasseerd door Quickstep. Dylan moest daardoor veel meters goedmaken ten opzichte van Gaviria. Vandaag zijn we op waarde geklopt.”
Groenewegen is het daar mee eens en kijkt vooral met blijdschap terug op de overwinning van gisteren. Daarnaast is hij trots op het seizoen dat hem acht overwinningen bracht. “We hebben een heel mooi jaar gehad. Ik ben trots op mijn sprinttrein die mij bij de grote successen heeft geholpen.”
Team LottoNL-Jumbo heeft het seizoen in China na 271 wedstrijddagen afgesloten. In totaal werd er 71 keer een podiumplek gevierd, waarvan er 26 keer een renner van Team LottoNL-Jumbo op de hoogste trede stond. Tien van die overwinningen werden behaald op World Tour niveau.

Tour of Guangxi, vierde etappe
Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) wint de vierde etappe van de Tour of Guangxi. Na drie vlakke etappes is het nu de beurt voor de mannen met de klimmersbenen.
Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) is op dit geaccidenteerde parkoers de tweede aankomende renner. Wout Poel finisht als zesde. Wilco Kelderman moet door een val opgeven.
Tim Wellens: “Aan het begin van de rit voelde ik me niet super goed maar de ploeg gaf mij vertrouwen en heeft mij de hele dag geholpen en uit de wind gezet. Toen wij de finale naderden, voelde ik me beter en op de slotklim had ik super, super goede benen. Aan de voet van de klim demarreerde Roche en ik sloot een beetje later aan met Mollema, en in de finale ben ik van beiden weggereden. Het geeft natuurlijk een heel goed gevoel, want iedereen wilde vandaag winnen. Het is een speciale ervaring om hier te koersen. Ik moet zeggen dat de organisatie zeer goed is, met mooie hotels en mooie wegen. Het is ook goed om onze ploeg in China te tonen. Ook conaamsponsor Soudal is hier actief!”
“Ik had op voorhand gezegd dat deze rit de moeilijkste zou zijn voor het algemeen klassement, maar ik had vandaag een superdag. Daarom hoop ik dat de twee komende dagen ook goed zullen gaan. Ik zit nu in een heel goede positie om de leiderstrui te verdedigen, al besef ik dat het niet gemakkelijk zal zijn, maar ik kan rekenen op een sterke ploeg. Ik wilde hier goed proberen zijn, maar bij een wedstrijd in China spelen ook factoren als jetlag en eten een rol. Tot nu toe is dat allemaal goed meegevallen.”
Team LottoNL-Jumbo heeft niet mee kunnen doen om de ereplaatsen in de koninginnenrit van de Tour of Guangxi. Op de slotklim was er een grote valpartij en de vooruitgeschoven Daan Olivier lag erbij. Lichtpunt van de dag was de prijs voor de strijdlust voor Victor Campenaerts.
“Hier baal ik behoorlijk van” vertelt Daan Olivier. “Op vijf kilometer voor de finish vielen ze rechts in het peloton. Wij zaten als ploeg rechts en konden geen kant meer op.” Olivier viel en ook ploeggenoot Amund Grondahl Jansen ging tegen de vlakte.
“Ik was hierheen gekomen voor een goed klassement. Ik had deze week ook voor het eerst na de Vuelta mijn goede gevoel weer terug”, aldus de vooruitgeschoven man vandaag. “Het is balen dat de mannen de hele dag voor mij werken en ik uiteindelijk onderuit ga. Helaas hoort dit ook bij het koersen. Ik ben er fysiek gelukkig goed vanaf gekomen.”
“Het zat ons niet mee”, voegt ploegleider Grischa Niermann daaraan toe. “Het waren uitgerekend Amund en Daan die onderuit gingen. Zij waren de twee mannen die het moesten doen vandaag. De schade valt mee, maar het is natuurlijk wel erg zuur.”
Campenaerts had de hele dag in de aanval gereden. De Belg van Team LottoNL-Jumbo werd samen met zijn vluchtgenoten net voor de slotklim teruggepakt. Zijn landgenoot Tim Wellens won de etappe. Campenaerts mocht de prijs voor de strijdlust in ontvangst nemen, zodat het team uiteindelijk niet helemaal met lege handen stond.

Fernando Gaviria blijft in de sprintmodus. Na de eerste en de tweede etappe van de Tour of Guangxi wint de Braziliaan ook de derde etappe. Vandaag gaat het van Nanning City naar Nanning City. Natuurlijk met een omweg, want de rit is 125,3 km. En weer is Max Walscheid (Team Sunweb) tweede. Magnus Cort Nielsen (Orica – Scott is de derde renner op het podium. Wouter Wippert finisht als vierde.
Dylan Groenewegen heeft in de derde etappe van de Tour of Guangxi wederom zijn kwaliteiten niet tentoon kunnen spreiden. In de massasprint kwam hij als twaalfde over de streep. De overwinning ging naar Fernando Gaviria.
Net als de voorgaande etappes werd ook deze gekenmerkt door een vroege vlucht. Veel speling kregen de vier op kop niet van de sprintersploegen, die hun zinnen duidelijk weer op een massasprint hadden gezet.
Voor Groenewegen was het zaak om door zijn ploeggenoten zo goed mogelijk te worden afgezet aan de streep. Dat ging niet zoals gewenst. “Ik kwam in een positie terecht waardoor sprinten onmogelijk was”, zei hij. Ploegleider Grischa Niermann zag het gebeuren. “De ploeg zat aan de kant van de weg waar te weinig ruimte was. Met een lead-out van vijf man heb je een stuk open weg nodig om Dylan goed af te zetten, maar die ruimte was er niet. Toen zaten ze klem.”
Morgen staat de eerste bergetappe op het programma. Volgens Niermann een etappe waarin er voor Team LottoNL-Jumbo niet veel op het spel staat. “Daan Olivier is onze man die in deze etappes vrij spel heeft. Wij zijn hier vooral voor de sprints”, aldus Niermann.

Tour of Guangxi 2017, tweede etappe
Fernando Gaviria (Quick Step Floors) wint ook de tweede etappe van de Tour of Guangxi. De uitslag is nagenoeg dezelfde als gisteren. Max Walscheid (Team Sunweb) wordt tweede In deze vlakke 156,7 km lange rit naar Nanning. Wouter Wippert (Cannondale – Drapac) finisht als derde. Dylan Grooenewegen (LottoNL – Jumbo) vinden we terug op de zevenenvijftigste plaats.
“Het ging goed tot en met de laatste honderden meters”, vertelt Groenewegen. De etappe werd gekenmerkt door een vroege vlucht die door de sprintersploegen binnen handbereik bleef. In de finale kwam alles bij elkaar en werd er lichtelijk bergop gesprint om de zege.
“Terwijl we aan het sprinten waren om de zege, zat ik goed om echt aan te gaan. De renner voor mij stuurde opeens naar links en voor ik het wist moest ik vol in de remmen om niet in de hekken te eindigen.”
Ploegleider Grischa Niermann spreekt over een typische sprintersrit. “We hadden met QuickStep afgesproken om na de bevoorrading te gaan rijden. Dat hebben we gedaan en uiteindelijk is het gat met de kopgroep dichtgereden. Vooral Victor Campenaerts heeft vandaag veel kilometers op kop gereden.”
Niermann zag opnieuw een teleurgestelde Groenewegen over de streep komen. “In de finale konden de andere mannen de lead-out opzetten en dat ging een stuk beter dan gisteren. Helaas werd Dylan gehinderd en kon hij niet meedoen om de zege.”

In Noord Italië is bij de wedstrijd van de vallende bladeren de herfst nog niet echt doorgebroken. In een aangenaam aanvoelend @lente zonnetje” rijden Philippe Gilbert (Quick Step Floors), Alessandro Dimachi (BMC) en Pelle Bilbao (Astana) aan het begin van de beklimming van de Civiglio nog even vooraan, maar halverwege de helling (10 procent dreiging percentage) is alles weer bij elkaar.
Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL – (Jumbo) heeft het op dat moment moeilijk en moet de grote groep laten gaan. Gianni Moscon (Sky) en Sam Oomen (Team Sunweb) rijden weg. Tevergeefs.
Op het allerstijlste gedeelte demarreren Vincenzo Nibali en Thabaut Pinot. En in de afdaling is Nibali de grote durfal en rijdt weg van zijn concurrent.

Deze wedstrijd is, samen met de donderdag te verrijden Milaan – Turijn, de opwarmer voor de koers van de vallende bladeren: De Giro di Lombardia.
Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain – Merida) en Thibaut Pinot (FdJ) hebben met nog 1 km te gaan de beste kansen, maar op amper 400 meter van de bevrijdende finishlijn komen Geniez en Ulissi bij de twee vluchters. Geniez wint nipt voor zijn landgenoot Pinot. Nibali wordt derde.

Jasper De Buyst slaat vandaag twee vliegen in een klap: de Lotto Soudal-renner pakt de overwinning in Binche-Chimay-Binche en ook het eindklassement van de Belgian Cycling Cup!
De dertigste editie van Binche-Chimay-Binche sloot vandaag de Belgian Cycling Cup af. Het parcours van 197 kilometer eindigde met vier plaatselijke ronden in de streek van Binche. De enige moeilijkheden van dag waren de Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure, de Côte des Violettes en de « Petit Poggio », maar die waren te vroeg in de wedstrijd om een echte invloed op de koers te kunnen hebben. Na bijna een uur vormden 28 renners, waaronder Jasper De Buyst, Moreno Hofland en Nikolas Maes, de ontsnapping. Met 90 kilometer te gaan vielen Jasper De Buyst, Cavagna, Castelijns, Devriendt, Jansen, Mainard, Pasqualon, Ruijgh, Trentin en Vakoc aan en de rest van de vluchters werden snel door het peloton gegrepen. De Buyst verzekerde de overwinning in het eindklassement van de Belgian Cycling Cup door de punten van de tussensprints te pakken. In het peloton was de samenwerking niet efficient genoeg en dat gaf de kopgroep de mogelijkheid om voorop te blijven tot aan de meet. Op de laatste kasseistrook probeerde Trentin te versnellen maar de Italiaan kon De Buyst niet lossen. Tom Devriendt kwam ook nog aansluiten. De Buyst wachtte op zijn ideale moment om de sprint te lanceren en was ontegensprekelijk de sterkste renner in die gereduceerde groep. Hij bezorgt Lotto Soudal de 22ste overwinning in 2017!
Jasper De Buyst: “Ik ben natuurlijk super tevreden. Binche-Chimay-Binche is een vrij lastige koers, en als jij die aan het einde van het seizoen kan winnen, mag je blij zijn. Ik klopMatteo Trentin, die op dit moment misschien een van de beste renners ter wereld is en dat maakt de overwinning nog een beetje mooier. Er was veel zenuwachtigheid in het peloton, onder meer door de wind. We waren op een bepaald moment met 28 renners voorop geraakt. Moreno Hofland en Nikolas Maes waren ook in die groep en de andere grote ploegen waren goed vertegenwoordigd. Met nog tachtig kilometer te gaan heeft Trentin een grote inspanning gedaan om de kopgroep tot tien renners te reduceren, en dat speelde zeker in mijn kaart, omdat Kenny Dehaes, mijn concurrent in de Belgian Cycling Cup, niet meer in de kopgroep zat. Ik heb drie tussensprints kunnen nemen, waardoor ik aan de leiding kwam. Vanaf dat moment kon ik zonder zorgen proberen mee te strijden voor de winst in Binche-Chimay-Binche. Ik had verwacht dat Trentin nog iets zou proberen in de slotkilometer en ik wist dat ik zijn wiel moest proberen te houden tot boven aan de hellende strook. Toen ik daar nog zat, was ik ervan overtuigd dat ik ook kansen had in de sprint en ik ben blij dat ik het heb kunnen afmaken.”

André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) wint in Poperinge de Omloop van de Westhoek. Bert Van Lerberghe en Tom Devriendt zijn de nummers twee en drie in de massasprint.
Het is de eesrte overwinning van Greipel sinds Mei van dit jaar.
André Greipel: “Het was een heel snelle koers, het gemiddeld lag ongeveer rond 48 kilometer per uur. Het was ook een zeer ongecontroleerde wedstrijd en dat hadden we op voorhand verwacht”.
“Wij hebben Tosh Van der Sande in de belangrijkste ontsnapping meegestuurd. Op veertig kilometer voor de finish hebben we de controle over het peloton genomen om het op een massasprint te laten uitdraaien. De lead-out hebben we goed gedaan met Tosh, Moreno, Jens en Jasper. We zijn kalm gebleven en wij hebben een sterke finale gereden”.
“Deze zege komt als een kleine opluchting. Ik had mijn twee vorige sprints gewonnen, maar die waren niet voor de overwinning. Ik heb altijd geprobeerd om kalm te blijven, en dat is niet altijd gemakkelijk als jij niet wint. Ik voelde dat het vertrouwen tussen mezelf en de ploeg intact was gebleven en ik wist dat de overwinning terug moest komen. Ik ben vandaag uiteraard heel blij met onze prestatie. Morgen is er nog een andere gelegenheid, en we hebben, onder meer met Jasper De Buyst, renners die kans maken in een koers zoals morgen.”

Steven Cummings rijdt in de eerste etappe van de tweedaagse wielerwedstrijd de Giro della Toscane, ook wel Memorial Alfredo Martini genoemd, naar de overwinning. De renner van Dimension Data sprint in Pontedera sneller dan de Columbiaan Egan Arley Bernal (Androni – Sidermec – Bottecchia) en Frederik Backaert (Wanty – Groupe Gobert).
Maar in deel 2 wordt de Engelsman uit de leiderstrui gereden door Guillaume Martin. De Fransman van Wanty – Groupe Gobert is aan de aankomst in Volterra, bergop, de beste klimmer. Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) en Mattia Cattaneo (Androni Sidermec Bottecchia) zijn de nemers twee en drie.
